MTV is MTV... what can you do?

Posted by #98 Alec Prassinos at 04-29-1999 8:31 PM

I really i don't see why every one hates MTV, and HFS with such a passion. Don't get me wrong, the stuff they play on these broadcast meduims are plastic shiny happy wonderland 11 year old fantasies made to sell records, but that's what they're there for. The sole reason MTV was put on this planet was to make money and sell records, even at the expense of raping american culture. This is true with plenty of other corporate conglomerates, ciggerettes, fake sugar, coke. Does the fact that pepsi spends billions of dollars a year just so i would buy they're product, make me the consumer a sellout? I think MTV is a particularly effective business, it sinks it's teeth into everything.. from rammstein to the backstreet boys. So what if they're a sellout, it's a money driven world. No matter how hard we try the world will never be rid of MTV because it makes money on stupid lame rich kids who like "cutting edge" bands. And another thing, i think a band has every right to advertise themselves in anyway they see fit on MTV, the fact they do makes them no less a good band. Unless it compromises them as musicians. For ANY band who makes music for the sole purpose of making money, or getting power, or women, are cheap sellouts. Making a video is a part of the whole music experience. It's an art, in and of itself. The visual is a powerful substance. But we just see it as something attached on to the song. And no MTV is not some multi-global shadow corporation playing what's cozy just because it's cozy, they play exactly what sells, and exactly what sells is n'sync, the backstreet boys, third eye blind, and other evil bands. Hfs on the other hand isn't that band, yes true they play evil bands, but if you've ever listened to a trancemissions front to back you would hear alot of so called "underground" music. They on average don't have as much advertising then MTV or even dc101. So i definately don't know why you guys hate them. Really all i'm getting at is it's about the music, the art. This is what really matters, who cares if someone needs to make a buck off of you. They do it all the time. Without the music none of it matters, so why should it matter with the music?
i close with a quote from trent reznor, (it might be a little off, it's from memmory)
"I hate doin soundtracks, but, you put the good songs on and it makes money.. not really opposed to that.."

I would like to hear what you have to say on this, despite my repuation in this fine establishment. Especially like to hear from any musicians. ~alec 98

Hey, We're not against bands making videos. we are just against the way MTV picks and chooses which bands it's going to play. Also the way it weilds its power. if you think artists can "choose" to be on MTV then you are have no idea whats going on. i would like to relate a few NIN things since you brought the mighty Reznor into this. First of all MTV would not play any of the videos on Broken so trent calls them up to see whats going on. they say they can't play anything that shows the human form in bondage. trent says "well what about madona?" they say "madona is madona" that just goes to show how full of themselves MTV is. i would also like to end this with a quote from trent...

"Sometimes it gets complicated when we don't remember if the file we're looking for is assfuck 25 on the fuckfuck 12 drive or fuckfuck 12 on the assfuck 25 drive. and when we're talking to each other in the studio, wondering aloud whether running the cunnykick file through the fuckchop
program on the asslick disc would help us access the turbocunt compression... it's really like speaking another language altogether."now thats what being a musician is all about. -RevWiLL

Well i dunno alec. basically i agree with REVWill on this MTV bullshit issue. I really cant remember any good songs i have heard on mtv first at least. Although they occasionally do play some good music they OVERPLAY it. Rammsteins song "Du Hast" was played so many times i began to hate it! And this Backstreet boy/ nsinc BULL SHIT has GOT to STOP!!!!!!! i mean they need GOOD music playing on MTV. If i was i a band, i wouldnt want my video played on the same station as BS boys and N'Stick. have fun jakin off to the pretty boys with no talent!!!! 'Rev Roach

MTV not only plays what's popular, they decide what's going to be popular by deciding what to play. For instance, I remember figures showing an increase in album sales after songs from those albums were played on Beavis an Butthead. I mean, c' mon, isn't that too much power for one station to have? I like the fact that they're promoting public enemy on their websirte, but most of the bands they promote are just poop.
