future of netcult, shaky

Posted by #4 b0b at 07-01-1999 2:37 PM

The immediate future of netcult.org is up in the air. I probably won't stay with this job too much longer, and therefore netcult might take some downtime because at the moment I dont have somewhere (fast) I can throw it back up at.

If anyone has access to a T1 or better, and is willing to donate some cpu cycles and bandwidth from a freebsd or linux machine (anything that'll run apache and mysql) that they have root on, then I'd like to arrange to send up the harddrive or do a big data dump. I might be able to throw some money in that direction but I've already put over $250 into this and haven't seen a penny back. I make too little at this job and its no longer worth my time to stay here, despite the fact that I'd like netcult to stay up.

I may be able to put it back up in August or September from UMCP, but I won't know that until I get there. It could be down for 2 months, probably not, but it could. If anyone wants to help.. drop me some mail (lcracker@netcult.org). All that I need is money and/or somewhere to put netcult (temporarily). I'll have somewhere else for it eventually, but for the timebeing it may be without a home.

I do this as a service to friends and the 'net community in general, I take a big hit from my pocket and time for it. It'd be nice if somebody else threw something in. I've waited a long time now, staying with a shitty job, just to keep this up for you all.. but the time is right for me to get ready to move on and I'm just letting you all know that netcult MIGHT be in danger.. I'll keep you all posted though. Help if you can.

future of netcult, shaky

It would be sad if there's no one else in the cult with a linux server. I'll keep a lookout at work but so far all the linux servers we have are intranet and I dont have root access to anything anyway.
If you get your ISDN cant you run it from home? Also: maybe you could just leave it at bethsoft, maybe they wont find it, hehe. Anyway, at worst we could put up a static version somewhere without the mysql for a while..

um, I have access to the shitty UMCP server. I guess that means I have a place, but it's very unreliable from my experience. If you want to try it out this summer, bring it on down

hehe, we could always put that 512K modem at DHS to use during the summer. nick kelsch is in netCULT, he probably wouldn't care too much since i'm pretty sure he's leaving that job. the green room would be a funny place to host netcult.

I dont think this is too much of b0b trying to find a new place to host us (we all know that is relatively easy) the problem being the expense to keep it up and running... b0b has done a hella lot in paying for and mainting this site and i give him mad props for that shit. As far as getting him some extra $$ to pay for this I have suggested merchandise. Me and K'rad are working on netcult.org t-shirts which fall into 2 categories, general grafik, and netcult advertisement. Once a few have been designed we will vote on the ones to send to print. Jerry knows a guy that can hook us up with a good deal. Anyway, if this goes through, which I hope it will cause many people have expressed interest in a CULT t-shit in the past, eventually we can make other crap like bumper stickers and what not. The sale of which should hopefully be enough to pay off keeping us up and running. If you all find a place to put us, the merchandiose should more than pay for it.

Damn, I'd offer my box, but I guess 56K isn't fast enough. Not to mention, my *one* phone line. I'll be out on tha lookout. Quick, steal Smiley's box! If he does get DSL for GNSweb, then you could just use his for a while, but I don't know if he'd get unlimited access. (Ben and Bob: I don't think he'd ever let b0b on his machine ever again anyways. Heh.)

I know of a place that does stickers really cheap, they can be pretty damn cool too. Go to www.stickerguy.com , you can request a price sheet and free example stickers to be mailed to you or you can check the prices on the site. Also, I can help with graphics, I got some mad graphics skillzzzz and can help design the shirts or stickers or whatever. Just let me know...I'll start on a couple of designs.
