Fear Factory/Static-X [9:30 Club]: Tom Gets Screwed

Posted by #43 Will Miller at 08-17-1999 12:09 PM

Last night's CULT representation at the 9:30 Club included Jerry, Cary, Nick, Darcie, Ben N., Tom, Doonan, Coby, Judy and myself. (if you're in THE CULT and were also at the show, lemme know)

Dope was the opening act, pretty good. More importantly, we all got a chance to meet Fear Factory's Dino Cazares before Dope came on. Nick gave him the address for netCULT and he said he'd look at it backstage but might not've had time. Dope didn't receive much audience appreciation, but they were the opening act and their CD hasn't been released yet.

We all went to the floor before Static-X came on. Damn, that was a kickass set. Wayne Static entered with his trademark hair and beard, which inspires people everyday. Cary has set the goal of having a beard as long as Wayne's, even if it takes 4 years. Much respect to whichever brand of hairgel he uses too. I also thought the guitarist Koichi Fukada was especially badass. They played just about every track from their debut album Wisconsin Death Trip.

Fear Factory was on next, performing tracks from their latest album Obsolete. "Edgecrusher" got a huge response from the floor, including Tom's injury.

While playing in the pit with one of his friends from RMA, someone else got between them and knocked Tom down. He either hit a knee, elbow, head or the floor (he doesn't remember) but his head was split open 3 inches just above his right eyebrow. The 9:30 staff noticed him bleeding as he walked back from the bathroom where he wiped off his face and got some water. Tom then came up to show us, although he pointed to his cheek when he saw me, so I didn't notice until later what had happened.

We stayed in the balcony area for 2 more songs and then Jerry came up and got me to leave, since I went in Tom's car. (Someone else who stayed for the whole show will have to finish Fear Factory's review)

Doonan brought the truck around and was instructed to meet us (Coby, Judy, Tom, 9:30 staff and I) at the Howard Medical Center across Georgia Ave from the club. 9:30 staff showed us to the emergency room, and Tom called his parents, agreeing to meet at the Shady Grove Hospital rather than staying in DC since the wound wasn't life threatening.

We dropped off Tom with his mom at the emergency room and she told us to just leave the truck at Maggie's house. While we got some JBC's, Tom had 28 stitches put in his head after learning that it did indeed go all the way to the bone. He said the doctor was really cool though. Good job Tom, you're alive and you'll have a kickass scar when it's healed.

yes the show was damn cool. static-X was very fucken cool. and the hair ass bad. and i would have to say i would like my hair to look like his on day. DAMNIT, i just got a hair cut. Owell.
fear factory was kick ass. but better last time. even though they pton one good show from what i saw. and that is when tom comes up to me a points to his eye. and i see these big ass cut over his eyebrow. the 9:30 people said he need to go get it looked at by a docter and all, so we said we would drive him to a hospital. but first we had to walk to Howard and then we took to to shady grove. then it was off to JBC land and then home. and i must say it was a damn good thing i didn't drink anything last night.
