Update on Jono
Posted by #1196 Christine Chun at 04-03-2000 3:29 PM
Hey all- Jono is off his respirator, finally, which is
very good. He can move his bicepts and wrists! Also,
we're considering reconstructive neurosurgery this April.
This procedure involves transplanting neural cells from
the leg to the spinal cord. Hopefully, this will allow
Jono to eventually walk, maybe in 2 years. The problem is,
the surgery cannot be performed in the United States, as
it is considered experimental. Oh- and it costs over
$20,000 for the whole thing (insurance won't pay because
it's, well, experimental). We have to find some cheap
($375 or less) airfare to the place where he's going to
get the surgery done. He's got to get to Quito, Ecuador
(airline code: UIO) at night on April 14th, and return
any time on May 1st for the surgery. Both my parents want
to accompany him for this surgery, so that would be 3
adults making a roundtrip flight to Quito from any airline
in the Washington D.C. area (Dulles, Ronald Reagan National, or BWI). If any of you have the time or mad connections (I
don't know- there's so many of you, there's probably a good
chance one person is related to a travel agent or mafia
member), would you mind looking for some cheap airfare?
The best I've found so far is $399 (so $1,200 total, not
including airport taxes and other bullshit fees), and if
you find anything to beat that, we would be eternally
grateful. E-mail me at tinnytintin@yahoo.com
UPDATE 3/17:
Hey all! Jon will be out of the Rehab Hospital on April 12,
and then he'll be leaving for reconstructive surgery on April
14th. His phone number is now 301-877-1226, if you want to call.
Thanks to all of you who have been so supportive, esp. those of
you who were able to visit him. It's made him feel a lot better.
UPDATE 4/3:
-Hey- Jono will come home from the hospital this Thursday, April 6th. You're welcome to visit (but please e-mail or call first so we know). « replies »

Do you guys have a plan for any sort of fund for Jono? I know a lot of people that would be willing to help pay for his surgery, and I'm sure you guys could use all of the help you can get. I'm pretty sure that you can get a free account at a local bank since it is for a charity cause. We raised over $1,000 for the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra for Ken's death. I think that could easily be increased to help Jono improve his LIFE. Maybe we could all get together and do some fund raising events like concerts or selling t-shirts or something.
