netCULT Status Report
Posted by #3 Ben G at 05-28-2000 2:33 AM
Netcult is back up for at least the rest of the summer. It's currently running off of my box, a pIII 600, which is enjoying Ethan Baker's (#267) 768/384* DSL. The connection's technically slower than the t1 at UMCP, but netcult no longer has to contend with hundreds of bandwidth eating Napster users, so it really is faster.
* Fun Fact: Ethan actually has SDSL, so it's really 768/768, but the provider limits uploads to 384kbps. However, they don't do it very well.. seems like each individual connection is limited to 384, but he can get 768 total.
Seeing as how I'd kinda like to be able to use my own computer, we need to build a new box for netcult. Next weekend (Saturday 6/3 or Sunday 6/4) we're going to the Computer Show and Sale to buy what we need (what we can afford, anyway). We have a lot of the hardware already; Cary's donating a hard drive, I'm donating the CPU (celeron 366), and Smiley has various other stuff lying around- but we still need donations to the netcult fund, at least another $100. If you can donate, give cash/checks (preferrably cash) to Cary (#1), Konrad (#9), or myself (#3) sometime really really soon. The more we get, the better netcult will be. All donations will go towards hardware for netcult, despite what Cary thinks. And if anyone wants to donate a motherboard or something *cough cough Cheez* feel free.
(btw, it was real fun setting up netcult on Ethan's network using a keyboard that had tea spilled on it. Typing . or l produced .l, n and m made either nm or mn, the down arrow made a slash, the left arrow made a K. Hitting ctrl-x turned scroll lock on. It's hard enough typing in IPs.. completely impossible to type in a password) « replies »

I've got some I'm sure, I think I have an abit bh-6 with something wrong with it, maybe the keyboard port doesn't work or something? I dunno. I've probably also got an extra CPU, a 300A or something
