netCULT gets a new home

Posted by #3 Ben G at 07-18-2000 2:29 AM

Thanks to the donations of about a dozen generous CULT members, THE CULT has finally managed to build itself a box of its own. For the specs see the end of this article. For the past 2 months (as of yesterday) netCULT has been running on my own computer, which I can finally get back, and spend the rest of the summer rotting my brain playing violent video games on.

CULT mail works now, after mysteriously being down for almost 2 months. pop3 works for those of you who don't like pine. If anyone wants an imap server (like pop3, but better), e-mail me. If you want a virtual pop account, go cry. It ain't gonna happen, setting that up is what screwed up mail before.

Everything that worked on the old box should work on this one, although it might be a little bit slower now. However, I'm working on completely rewriting netCULT's code to be at least reasonably faster and a lot more flexible. It will (eventually) allow for multiple site designs, so you can pick whichever one you want. Rev. K-rad's been working on a new design in his spare time (a.k.a. when he's at work), and it should be ready sometime soon (2001 or so, seeing as how the code has to be rewritten for the new design to work).

If you find anything broken, e-mail me. If you want any nifty features implemented, e-mail me. If you want to give me loads of money and/or a nice porsche/corvette, e-mail me. Yes, I know how to copy and paste, I'm just happy that mail works again

We do still need donations, as Cary is going to want his hard drive back (god knows why, it's a p.o.s.). And even if he doesn't want it back, it's probably going to crash sometime soon, it's got some serious issues. If we can't afford a hard drive with donations we'll probably resort to selling half of netCULT's ram, which may or may not lead to memory problems. Of course if you've got a decent hard drive you want to donate, feel free. We take donations in the form of cash (U.S. dollars), checks (made out to me), useful hardware, sex, and cuban refugees. If you want to donate, e-mail me or message me on AIM (sonuvbob).

The specs: netCULT is currently a Celeron 366 with 256 megs of ram, an Asus p2-b motherboard, and a Quantum Bigfoot 6 GB hard drive (7.4 GB in theory, but it's got problems). And we got the case for twenty bucks. Hell yeah.

I'd just like to make a correction: I actually do work on netcult's design at home. If I were working on it at work it'd be done in windows paint and I dont think anyone wants that. I did however code almost all of CULTcollege (coming soon) at work.
