Atlantic City? Why not?
Posted by #1 Cary C at 03-15-2002 1:24 AM
So, last night as I am studying German, writing a 2 page paper on various readings, and doing a take home midterm, Harrison IM's me and says "I'm bored, let's go to Atlantic City." I looked at the clock, it read 11:30pm. I look at my stack of homework, and my laundry pile. "Ok, I'm in" I respond. Harrison explained that his roomate Earnest (that could be spelled wrong) was also heading up there with us. Before we left I was assured by Harrison that the Rod would make it. Bear in mind this is a car produced by honda in 1982. I didn't really believe that it would make the trip, but I just wanted to hear his word for assurance, and so I could blame him later if anything went wrong.
So we left UMBC at about midnight, hoping to make it to NJ by 3am. As it turns out, Mapquest sucks, and we ended up taking 40 as opposed to the toll road, and we got there faster than estimated. Although within the last 5 miles of the trip, the Rod started loosing power. The headlights dimmed, the interior lights failed, and it was only a matter of time before the car died along with them. Luckily we made it into a parking lot before this happened. Hotrod shut off the car, and turned the key to see if the car would start. It didn't even turn over. So we walk into the Hyatt Casino, and get a greyhound bus schedule. As it turned out, the only bus that came close to us, was stopping in Philly. So we came up with the plan that me and Ernest would leave at 6am to catch this bus, while Hotrod dealt with the car.
After these accomodations were made we took up gambling. I sarted on some video poker along with Harrison, while Earnest charged for the Black Jack table with his $60 or so. After loosing at video poker I took to the black jack table with Earnest and Harrison. I bought my $30 in chips (the table was a $10 minimum), and lost all $30 in 3 hands. Damn unlucky friggin deals. In retrospect I wish I had more money but am glad I didn't. Harrison made $40 on top of his $60, then lost it all back down to $5, which he then lost on slots. Meanwhile Earnest plays like a friggin champ even though the drunk guys to his left were spouting out "gambling tips" to him the whole night, and when they weren't doing that they were acting all Jerry Springer like with the ladies to his right. Anyway, Earnest made something like $100, and found out the lady next to him was going to Wilmington, Deleware that night, so after contemplating asking for a ride, we decided to go greyhound, and Earnest cashed in his chips, with his now $60 winnings.
We headed out to Harrison's car, which miraculously started. We were totally baffled considering the battery was in fact dead when we left it. Either way, this made Earnest way to happy that he could go gamble again, and he lead the speed walk back to the black jack table. Where he lost all but $15 of his dollars. Strangely enough, he was able to turn that into something well over $100. We watched him and some of the other casino goers to kill time. And let me tell you, at 3am on a Wednesday morning in March, the only people in a casino are old people and asian tourists. So we walked back over to watch Earnest, who had something like $60, left to gamble with, lost $10 and we decided to leave. Half way to the door Earnest says "I want one more hand." We're both like "no lets just go." To which he responded, "I'll bet $50 on this hand." So we went back to watch this. He threw down his $50, and the dealer kicked his ass with a black jack. This is when we left.
We walked back out to the car, talking about how we all had fun and how we all had lost money. But if you look at gambling like a theme park, you go in to purposfully waste money, than you have a great time, if you get caught up in your losses, than you just dont get the point. Anyway, we hopped in the Rod and headed home. I got to drive the Rod, to which I can say, if you ever get the opportunity, decline.« replies »
